Emergency Orthodontics Liverpool: What to Do When Braces Break
Getting braces is an exciting step toward a perfect smile for your child or teen. However, life happens, and occasionally, a wire might snap, or a bracket might come loose. While true orthodontic emergencies are rare, knowing how to handle these situations can save you and your child a lot of stress. At Your Family Dentist Liverpool, we are here to support you through every step of your child’s orthodontic journey. Here is our kid-friendly guide to handling emergency orthodontics in Liverpool.
What Counts as an Orthodontic Emergency?
First, take a deep breath! Most issues with braces are minor and can be temporarily managed at home until you can see us. A true emergency usually involves severe pain, swelling, or trauma to the face or mouth. According to Your Family Dentist Liverpool, you should seek immediate medical attention if your child experiences a severe facial injury.
For most other braces-related issues, here is how you can help your child at home:
Common Braces Issues and How to Handle Them
1. A Loose or Broken Bracket
Brackets are the small squares glued to the teeth. They can occasionally come loose if your child eats something hard or sticky, or if they receive a bump to the mouth.
- What to do: If the bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it in place. You can use a small piece of orthodontic wax to cover the bracket so it doesn’t rub against the inside of the cheek. If the bracket comes completely off, keep it in an envelope or small container and bring it to your next appointment.
- Next step: Call our clinic. We will advise you if you need to come in immediately or if it can wait until your child’s next scheduled adjustment.
2. A Poking or Broken Wire
As teeth move, the wire connecting the brackets can sometimes extend past the last bracket and poke the back of the cheek, causing irritation.
- What to do: The easiest and safest solution is to dry the area with a tissue and apply a pea-sized amount of orthodontic wax over the poking end of the wire. If the wire has snapped completely, do not attempt to cut it yourself, as your child could swallow the piece.
- Alternative fix: If wax isn’t helping, you can try using the clean eraser end of a pencil to gently push the wire flat against the tooth.
- Next step: Call us to schedule a quick visit so we can clip or replace the wire safely.
3. General Soreness
It is completely normal for your child’s teeth to feel sore or tender for a few days after getting braces on or after an adjustment appointment. This means the braces are working!
- What to do: Stick to a soft food diet (soup, mashed potatoes, yogurt, smoothies) for a couple of days. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, can be used according to the package directions. Rinsing the mouth with warm salt water can also soothe irritated gums.
4. Mouth Sores or Irritation
The lips and cheeks need time to get used to the new braces. During the first few weeks, it’s common for small sores to develop.
- What to do: Orthodontic wax is your best friend here. Dry the bracket causing the irritation and press a small piece of wax over it. This creates a smooth surface and allows the sore to heal. The mouth will toughen up over time, and the sores will stop forming.
Preventing Braces Emergencies
The best way to handle an emergency is to prevent it from happening in the first place. Remind your child of these golden rules:
- Avoid Forbidden Foods: Keep them away from hard, sticky, or chewy foods like ice, hard candies, caramel, and popcorn.
- Wear a Mouthguard: If your child plays sports, a custom-fitted orthodontic mouthguard is essential to protect their teeth and their braces from impact.
- Don’t Pick at Braces: Encourage them not to pick at their wires or brackets with their fingers or pencils.
