First Orthodontic Visit Liverpool: What Parents Should Expect
As a parent, you want to ensure your child has the best possible start in life, and that includes a healthy, confident smile. If your child is approaching their seventh birthday, or if you have noticed their adult teeth coming in a little crooked, it might be time for an orthodontic evaluation. At Your Family Dentist Liverpool, we understand that visiting the dentist for braces can be a source of anxiety for both parents and children. That is why we have designed our first orthodontic visit in Liverpool to be informative, relaxed, and entirely kid-friendly.
When Should Your Child Have Their First Visit?
Many parents believe they should wait until their child is a teenager and all their baby teeth have fallen out before considering braces. However, waiting too long can sometimes make treatment more complicated.
According to Your Family Dentist, the Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends an initial orthodontic screening by the age of 7. At this age, your child will have a mix of primary (baby) teeth and permanent adult teeth. More importantly, their jaw is still actively growing. This allows our experienced dental team to identify subtle problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still present.
What Happens During the Initial Consultation?
Your child’s first orthodontic visit is all about gathering information and making them feel comfortable in the dental chair. There are no needles, no drills, and absolutely no pain involved.
1. Comprehensive Visual Examination
We start by having a friendly chat with you and your child. We will ask about any habits, such as thumb sucking or mouth breathing, which can affect jaw development. Then, our dentist will gently examine your child’s mouth, looking at how the teeth fit together (the bite), the spacing or crowding of the teeth, and the relationship between the upper and lower jaws.
2. Digital Imaging and X-Rays
To see what is happening beneath the gums, we will take low-dose digital X-rays, including an OPG (Orthopantomogram). This panoramic X-ray gives us a complete view of the upper and lower jaws, allowing us to see all the adult teeth that have not yet erupted. We may also use our 3D intraoral scanner to take a quick, comfortable digital impression of your child’s teeth—no messy putty required.
3. Discussing the Findings
Once we have all the information, we will sit down with you to discuss our findings. We will explain whether your child needs treatment, when the best time to start would be, and what type of treatment is most appropriate. We will present all available options, including traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, or Phase 1 early intervention appliances like expanders.
Phase 1 vs. Phase 2 Orthodontics
If we identify a significant issue, such as a severe crossbite or a jaw that is too narrow to accommodate adult teeth, we may recommend Phase 1 orthodontics. This early intervention is designed to guide jaw growth and create space, preventing more severe problems from developing. Phase 2 treatment usually occurs later, during the teenage years, and involves full braces or Invisalign to perfect the alignment of the permanent teeth.
