The Demands on an Implant Crown
An implant crown faces unique challenges compared to a crown placed on a natural tooth. Because the implant is fused directly to the jawbone (osseointegration), it lacks the periodontal ligament that acts as a natural shock absorber for real teeth. Therefore, the crown material must be incredibly strong to withstand biting forces without transferring damaging stress to the implant or the opposing natural teeth.

Option 1: All-Porcelain (Ceramic) Crowns
For front teeth (incisors and canines), aesthetics are the primary concern. All-porcelain crowns are the undisputed champions of natural beauty.
High-quality dental porcelain mimics the light-reflecting properties of natural enamel perfectly. It has a slight translucency that makes the tooth look alive, rather than like a flat, opaque block. Zirconia is the ideal material for implant crowns replacing back molars. It can withstand immense biting pressure without chipping or fracturing. Modern monolithic zirconia is also highly aesthetic. It is tooth-coloured and can be polished to a smooth, natural finish. While it lacks the deep translucency of pure porcelain, it is an excellent, highly durable choice for posterior teeth where strength is the priority.
Option 3: Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM)
PFM crowns offer a balance of strength and aesthetics. They consist of a strong metal alloy core covered by a layer of tooth-coloured porcelain.
While they were the standard for many years, they have largely been superseded by Zirconia. The main drawback of PFM crowns is that the dark metal core can sometimes cast a grey shadow near the gum line, especially if the gums recede over time. We generally prefer modern, all-ceramic options for our patients.
Option 4: Gold Alloys
Gold has been used in dentistry for centuries because it is incredibly durable, gentle on opposing natural teeth, and rarely chips or breaks.
While a gold crown on an implant will likely last a lifetime, its distinct colour makes it highly visible. Therefore, gold is typically only requested by patients for replacing very back molars where the tooth is not visible when smiling.
