Invisalign Retainers: What Happens After Your Clear Aligner Treatment?
Completing your Invisalign treatment is a major milestone. After months of wearing clear aligners, swapping them out every few weeks, and watching your smile gradually transform, the day finally arrives when Dr Nick tells you your teeth are perfectly aligned. You can finally enjoy your new, confident smile without any attachments or active aligners.
However, the journey does not end the day you finish your last set of Invisalign trays. To keep your teeth in their new, perfect positions, you must enter the retention phase. At Your Family Dentist, we ensure every orthodontic patient understands the critical importance of Invisalign retainers (often Vivera® retainers) to protect their investment.
Why Are Retainers Necessary?
Teeth have a “memory.” They are held in the jawbone by the periodontal ligament, a flexible network of fibres. During Invisalign treatment, the aligners apply constant, gentle pressure to stretch and compress these ligaments, allowing the teeth to move through the bone. Once the pressure is removed (when treatment ends), those elastic ligaments naturally want to snap back to their original positions.
This phenomenon is called orthodontic relapse. Without a retainer to hold the teeth in place while the bone and ligaments solidify around their new positions, your teeth will shift back toward where they started. A retainer acts as a stabiliser, locking in your results.
Introducing Vivera® Retainers
While there are several types of retainers available (such as traditional Hawley wire retainers or fixed permanent wires bonded behind the teeth), the most common choice for Invisalign patients is the Vivera retainer. Manufactured by Align Technology (the makers of Invisalign), Vivera retainers offer several distinct advantages:
- Familiar Comfort: They look and feel almost identical to your Invisalign clear aligners, making the transition seamless.
- Superior Strength: Vivera retainers are made from a proprietary material that is 30% stronger and twice as durable as other leading clear retainer materials. This is crucial because retainers must withstand the forces of a fully functioning bite over a long period.
- Precise Fit: They are custom-made using the same state-of-the-art 3D imaging technology used to create your aligners, ensuring an exact, comfortable fit.
- Convenient Sets: Vivera retainers are typically supplied in sets of three or four pairs. If you lose or damage one, you have an immediate backup ready to use.
The Retention Protocol: How Long Do You Wear Them?
The short answer to “How long do I have to wear a retainer?” is: For as long as you want your teeth to stay straight. However, the daily wear protocol changes over time.
Phase 1: Full-Time Wear (Months 1 to 6)
Immediately after finishing your active Invisalign treatment, your jawbone is still relatively soft around the newly moved teeth. During this critical stabilisation phase, Dr Nick will likely instruct you to wear your Vivera retainers full-time—between 20 and 22 hours a day, exactly as you wore your active aligners. You should only remove them to eat, drink anything other than water, and brush/floss.
Phase 2: Night-Time Wear (After 6 Months)
Once Dr Nick confirms that your teeth have stabilised and the bone has hardened, you will transition to night-time wear. You will need to wear your retainers every night while you sleep (roughly 8 hours a day). This phase typically lasts for the rest of your life. While the bone has solidified, the natural aging process causes teeth to shift slightly forward and inward over decades. Nightly retainer wear prevents this natural shifting.
How to Care for Your Retainers
Because you will be wearing your retainers for a long time, proper hygiene and maintenance are essential to prevent them from becoming cloudy, smelly, or damaged.
- Clean Them Daily: Brush your retainers gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush and lukewarm water every time you take them out. Avoid using hot water, as it can warp the plastic.
- Avoid Toothpaste: Do not use regular toothpaste to clean your retainers. Toothpaste is abrasive and will create microscopic scratches in the plastic, which harbour bacteria and cause cloudiness. Use a mild, clear liquid soap instead.
- Use Cleaning Crystals: Soak your retainers in Invisalign Cleaning Crystals or a specialized retainer cleaning tablet (like Retainer Brite) a few times a week to remove stubborn plaque and keep them fresh.
- Store Them Safely: When your retainers are not in your mouth, they must be in their protective case. The most common ways people lose retainers are wrapping them in a napkin at a restaurant (and accidentally throwing them away) or leaving them where a pet can chew them.
What If I Lose or Break My Retainer?
