Top 10 Dental FAQs Answered by Your Liverpool Dentist
At Your Family Dentist in Liverpool, we believe that patient education is a fundamental part of providing excellent healthcare. Every day, Dr Nick and our team answer questions from patients who want to better understand their oral health, treatment options, and how to maintain a beautiful smile. To help you stay informed, we have compiled and answered the top ten most frequently asked dental questions we receive at our clinic.
1. How often should I visit the dentist for a check-up?
As a general rule, we recommend visiting the dentist every six months for a comprehensive examination and professional clean. However, this is not a one-size-fits-all answer. If you have a history of periodontal (gum) disease, a high rate of tooth decay, or certain medical conditions like diabetes, Dr Nick may recommend visiting every three to four months to keep your oral health closely monitored.
2. Why do my gums bleed when I brush or floss?
Bleeding gums are not normal and should never be ignored. They are usually the first sign of gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease. This is caused by a buildup of plaque and tartar along the gumline, which irritates and inflames the tissue. If caught early, gingivitis is entirely reversible with a professional clean at our Liverpool clinic and improved oral hygiene at home. If left untreated, it can progress to severe periodontitis and eventually tooth loss.
3. What is the best way to whiten my teeth safely?
While there are countless over-the-counter whitening strips and toothpastes available, professional teeth whitening is the safest and most effective method. At Your Family Dentist, we offer custom-fitted whitening trays and professional-grade bleaching gel. Because the trays are moulded exactly to your teeth, the gel stays on the enamel and away from your gums, minimizing sensitivity and providing vastly superior, even results compared to generic kits.
4. I have a missing tooth. Do I really need to replace it?
Yes. A missing tooth is more than just a cosmetic issue. When a tooth is lost, the surrounding teeth will naturally begin to shift and tilt into the empty space, altering your bite alignment. Furthermore, the jawbone in the area of the missing tooth will begin to shrink (resorb) due to lack of stimulation. Replacing the tooth with a dental implant, bridge, or denture prevents these structural changes and restores your ability to chew properly.
5. What are Same-Day Crowns and how do they work?
Traditionally, getting a dental crown required two visits and wearing a fragile temporary crown for weeks while an external lab made the permanent one. At Your Family Dentist, we utilize advanced CEREC technology and an in-house dental laboratory. We use a 3D digital scanner to take an impression of your tooth, design the crown on a computer, and mill it from a solid block of high-quality ceramic right here in our Liverpool clinic. You walk out the very same day with your permanent, natural-looking crown.
6. Are dental X-rays safe?
Absolutely. Modern digital X-rays emit an incredibly low amount of radiation—significantly less than traditional film X-rays and less than the natural background radiation you are exposed to simply by walking outside on a sunny day. The diagnostic value of X-rays is immense, allowing us to see hidden decay, bone loss, and infections that cannot be detected during a visual exam.
7. What is the difference between Invisalign and traditional braces?
Both are highly effective orthodontic treatments, but they work differently. Traditional braces use metal or ceramic brackets glued to the teeth, connected by wires that are tightened to shift the teeth. Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable plastic aligners. Invisalign is virtually invisible and allows you to eat normally and brush your teeth without navigating around wires, making it a highly popular choice for adults in Liverpool.
8. How do I know if I have a cavity?
In the early stages, a cavity (tooth decay) often has no symptoms at all. This is why regular six-monthly check-ups are so important. As the decay progresses deeper into the tooth, you may experience sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods, a mild toothache, or visible dark spots on the tooth. If you experience any of these symptoms, book an appointment immediately before the decay reaches the nerve.
9. At what age should my child first visit the dentist?
The Australian Dental Association recommends that a child’s first dental visit should occur when their first tooth erupts, or no later than their first birthday. These early visits are crucial for establishing a “dental home,” getting your child comfortable with the clinic environment, and allowing Dr Nick to check for early signs of decay and ensure their jaw and teeth are developing correctly.
10. What should I do in a dental emergency?
If you experience severe dental pain, a knocked-out tooth, a broken crown, or swelling in your face or gums, you need to see a dentist immediately. At Your Family Dentist, we reserve time in our daily schedule specifically for emergency appointments. Call our clinic right away, and we will prioritize getting you out of pain and stabilizing the situation.
