Back to School with Braces: A Parent’s Guide in Liverpool
The start of a new school term is a busy time for families in Liverpool. Between buying uniforms, packing lunches, and organising schedules, dental health can sometimes fall down the priority list. If your teenager has recently started orthodontic treatment, heading back to the classroom presents a few unique challenges. At Your Family Dentist Liverpool, we want to ensure your child’s smile stays healthy and their treatment stays on track during the school day. Here is our essential back to school with braces guide.
Packing the Perfect Braces-Friendly Lunch
Navigating the school canteen or packing a lunchbox requires a bit more thought when your child wears metal or ceramic braces. Hard, crunchy, and sticky foods are the enemy of orthodontic hardware.
According to Your Family Dentist, a broken bracket means an emergency trip to the clinic and potentially extended treatment time. Avoid packing whole apples, hard muesli bars, popcorn, or sticky lollies like Minties or Red Skins. Instead, opt for soft, braces-friendly alternatives:
- Soft sandwiches with crusts removed (or soft wraps)
- Yoghurt, cheese sticks, and soft fruits like bananas or berries
- Pasta, rice dishes, or soft salads
- Smoothies or protein shakes
The Essential School Survival Kit
We highly recommend putting together a small “braces survival kit” for your teenager to keep in their school bag or locker. This empowers them to handle minor issues independently.
The kit should include:
- A travel toothbrush and toothpaste: Brushing after lunch is crucial to prevent food from getting stuck in the wires, which can cause bad breath and decay.
- Orthodontic wax: If a wire pokes their cheek or a bracket rubs during PE class, a small piece of wax provides instant relief.
- Interdental brushes (Piksters): Perfect for quickly dislodging stubborn food particles from between the brackets when they do not have time for a full brush.
- Lip balm: Braces can cause lips to dry out, especially in air-conditioned classrooms.
Managing Sports and PE
If your child plays contact sports like rugby, soccer, or basketball, protecting their braces—and their mouth—is non-negotiable. A standard boil-and-bite mouthguard from the chemist will not fit properly over braces and can actually damage the hardware upon impact. We strongly advise having a custom orthodontic mouthguard fitted at our Liverpool clinic. It is designed to accommodate the braces while providing superior protection against dental trauma.
Invisalign for Teens: The Easier Option?
If your teenager is struggling with the restrictions of traditional braces, Invisalign for Teens might be a better fit. Because the clear aligners are removed for eating, there are zero lunchbox restrictions. They can also remove them to play wind instruments or heavy contact sports. However, they must be disciplined enough to wear the aligners for 22 hours a day and store them safely in their case during lunch breaks—not wrapped in a tissue where they might be accidentally thrown away!
