Important information about risks

Preparing a tooth for a crown involves the irreversible removal of healthy tooth structure. Once a tooth has been prepared it will always require a crown or similar restoration. Possible complications include temporary or persistent sensitivity, discomfort at the gum margin, and irritation of the dental pulp which may subsequently require root canal treatment or extraction.

Crowns can chip, fracture, wear, debond or require replacement over time. Longevity varies considerably between individuals depending on bite forces, grinding or clenching habits, gum health and oral hygiene. Quoted lifespans are averages drawn from clinical literature and are not a guarantee of the result in your case.

Your dentist will discuss the risks, benefits and alternatives that apply to your circumstances before you consent to treatment. You are encouraged to seek a second opinion from another appropriately qualified health practitioner.

The Basics

What Are Dental Crowns?

Crowns are synthetic caps — usually made from a material like porcelain — placed over the top of a tooth. They restore a tooth’s function and appearance, often after a restorative procedure such as a root canal or when decay has removed large portions of the tooth.

Crowns are also used to attach bridges, cover implants, and stop a cracked tooth or loose filling from getting worse. They serve an aesthetic purpose too — restoring a discoloured or stained tooth to its natural appearance.

  • Synthetic caps placed over a damaged tooth
  • Restore a tooth’s function & appearance
  • Used after root canals or heavy decay
  • Also cover implants & anchor bridges

Crown Advantages & Disadvantages

👍 Advantages

  • Restores strength — chew comfortably, prevent breakage
  • Natural look — colour-matched to your teeth
  • Preserves tooth structure — avoids extraction
  • Versatile — covers cracks, supports fillings, anchors bridges
  • Durable — PFM & zirconia last many years

👎 Disadvantages

  • Cost — a bigger investment than a filling
  • Multiple visits for traditional crowns (not same-day)
  • Irreversible — some enamel must be removed
  • Possible temporary sensitivity to hot & cold
  • Porcelain can chip under excessive pressure
Your Options

Dental Crown Materials

We help you choose the right material for strength, looks and budget.

🥇

Metal

Highly durable (gold, palladium & base-metal alloys) — but more noticeable due to colour.

💎

Porcelain

A natural look — porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) or all-porcelain options.

🛡️

Zirconia

Strong and natural-looking — an excellent balance of durability and aesthetics.

Replace Missing Teeth

What Are Dental Bridges?

Bridges are natural-looking dental appliances that replace a section of missing teeth. Custom-made and barely noticeable, they restore the natural contour of your teeth and the proper bite relationship between your upper and lower teeth.

Also known as fixed partial dentures, bridges are securely bonded to your natural teeth or implants. They’re usually made from porcelain, gold alloys, or a combination of materials.

  • Natural look & feel — eat, speak & smile confidently
  • Improved speech — restores clear articulation
  • Prevents shifting — keeps neighbouring teeth aligned
  • Maintains facial structure — avoids a sunken look

Make It Last

Caring for Your Crowns

With proper care, a high-quality crown can last eight years or longer. Flossing around the crown is essential to avoid plaque build-up and debris around the restoration.

  • Floss daily around the crown to prevent plaque
  • Avoid grinding & jaw clenching (bruxism shortens crown life)
  • Skip ice, hard candy & brittle foods that can damage it
  • See us promptly if a crown feels loose or cracked

Same-Day Crown Questions, Answered

Using CEREC technology, we take a digital impression of your tooth and mill your custom crown on-site — so it can be designed, made and fitted in a single appointment, with no temporary crown or second visit.

Same-day crowns are $1,000 per tooth. This price covers the crown, its design and its fitting; it does not include the initial consultation, imaging, or any preparatory treatment such as root canal therapy, which are quoted separately. We also offer flexible payment plans, including payment through superannuation and in-house pay-per-appointment options.

With proper care, a high-quality crown can last eight years or longer. Flossing around the crown and avoiding grinding or hard foods helps maximise its lifespan.

Crowns can be made from metal (gold, palladium or base-metal alloys), porcelain (PFM or all-porcelain), or zirconia — which is strong and natural-looking. We’ll recommend the best option for your needs.

A crown caps and restores a single damaged tooth. A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring to the natural teeth or implants on either side of the gap.

The procedure is comfortable — we numb the area fully, and offer IV and conscious sedation for anxious patients. Any temporary sensitivity afterwards is mild and easily managed.
